GMR Fetoplex Hand Wired Boost Pedal. I spend a lot of time thinking about, experimenting and researching the ways that the great guitarists of the 60's and 70's got those magical tones. I have owned/repaired most classic valve amps, guitars and pedals and always been left wondering how certain players produced there tones. Players like Jimmy Page, Joe Walsh, Randy Rhodes, Steve Howe, Eddie Van Halen and even Ace Frehley. All these players seemed to have more bite, sustain and drive than there amps seem to be able to produce but still having clear tones without being overly saturated.
These players had one piece of equipment in common, the Maestro Echoplex EP-3. These players didn't only use these units for their echo function but for the colouration and boost from the preamp section. The EP-3 had a strange quirk that seems alien to today's true bypass way of thinking. Even with the echo function switched off the signal still passed through the preamp attenuating the highs and lows and giving a midrange boost of around 10dB.I've decided you can make your own with. Spares for much much less but use point to point hand wiring to make it extra special. As an extra bonus the pedal has a volume control which was a popular mod at the time that I found on a unit modified for Brian May on my Google wanderings.
This allows use to dial in the right amount of boost for our amp but without changing the amplification characteristics like changing the gain of the circuit would. What is the GMRspares Miniature Tagboard? Most mid 60's electronics were made utilising point to point hand wiring. Many high end boutique pedal makers use tag board meant for amplifiers which is to large to fit in a smaller more practical pedal size. I decided to make my own based on the same principles and from materials freely available in the era.
Taking inspiration from Leo Fender I decided to use Vulcanised Fibre board as he did on his pickups and amplifiers. This means I can miniaturise the tag board design to fit in a smaller case whist keeping the same components. No PCB's or Vero board. Just point to point hand wired goodness. 1 x Eddystone design Case.
